A Beautiful Accident

Red Pill was a beautiful accident. One rehearsal, Arpi brings in a keyboard and starts to punch in some spacey, electronic stingers. The boys were exchanging words in Hungarian, and I was quietly setting up the camera and rodecaster before they stopped and looked at me. "Can you come here and play this keyboard?" Arpi asks.

I'd never played a keyboard before. But I wander over.

"Do this, again and again," Arpi says and presses three buttons, one after the other. This kind of cosmic church organ bursts out in a staggering but simple melody and I immediately dig it.

Seemed simple enough.

The moment Red Pill was born.

"After we do this three times, then you go to the mic and sing something," George said.

"Okay."

So I press in that sequence of three keys and suddenly Gay Boy on the drums, Arpi on guitar and Georgie on the bass start up this incredible rhythm from nothing and it's matching up with the keys like dirt on a dirty grin.

I remember sitting in this sound for a moment, in just the right moment, and then George touched my arm gently, signalling me to stop the keys and try the mic.

I staggered over, almost in a daze, and sang whatever had grown in my throat from the moment the first notes smashed the Bunker.

Nonsense, really, but a melody nonetheless. And the more I sang it the more I felt the song Red Pill form.

We kept this up for a verse and a half then had that moment where we all stopped, looked and grinned at each other and then burst into laughter and excitement. "We got something here!"

"And playing the keyboard is easy! Three buttons, so simple!" I chirrup.

--

It's rarely been so simple since. Moments of pure synchronicity are diamonds. But these make all the hours of hard work, patience, compromise, frustration and fear worth it.
